Alex Nicholls joined United until the end of the season in a deadline day move but it was a move that was a long time coming for Manager Ray McKinnon who attempted to bring the 29-year-old to the Club in the summer.
Ray said, “We had enquired about him last summer through a good friend of mine down in England who knew what we were after. Once we heard he was available a few days before the end of the window, I was keen to bring him in - with a view to the rest of the season and hopefully, beyond.”
Alex, who has more than 250 appearances across the football league in England behind him, spoke of his delight at securing the move to Tannadice saying: “I can’t wait to get started. Once I have met everyone and discovered a bit about the league and the teams I want to focus on the game at the weekend and try to win it.”
Although he hasn't yet considered what is beyond the loan period, Alex feels a fantastic opportunity has presented itself and it was one he was keen to invest in.
“I have left my family back in Birmingham and this shows how hungry I am and how desperate I am to play rather than sit in a stand. I see this as a massive opportunity at a massive Club and, although my focus is on the day-to-day right now, who knows what can happen in the future.
“There is a lot of nervous energy right now but that keeps you on your toes. The guys seem a great bunch and I can't wait to get on the training pitch and doing my job.” he said.
The Manager had spoken about the need for greater width and creativity and Alex, who can play in any of the four forward positions comfortably, feels he can bring this and more to the squad.
“I am an attacking player, I am an exciting player and when played wide I want to deliver good crosses and if played up top I want to be on the end of the crosses and score the goals which win games.
“I know where this Club expects to be come the end of the season and I am in tune with that.” said the speedy forward.
Alex will be in the match day squad on Saturday for the visit of Raith Rovers for a 5.15pm kick-off at Tannadice.
