SRTRC EVENT

Dundee United were delighted to host the Show Racism the Red Card team at Tannadice today for an anti-racism educational event with local pupils from St John’s High School. The event was made possible through funding from ArabTRUST who have supported the campaign since it started in Scotland. The event featured a carousel of educational workshops exploring assumptions about racism, looking at stereotypes and reasons why people move. Following a stadium tour delivered by in-house historians from the Dundee United Business Club, the focal point of the event was immigration, which was made extra special as first team players Tony Andreu, William Edjenguélé, Wato Kuaté and Jassem Sukar joined in during the workshops to share their life stories as immigrants to Scotland. In the afternoon, the pupils had the opportunity to act as media journalists in role play activities and posed some tough questions to Tony, William, Wato and Jassem. Colin Stewart, Associate Director of Dundee United, said: “We are passionate about our work with Show Racism The Red Card. They are a fantastic organisation and their contribution to society is quite simply invaluable. As a community club, we are proud to play our part in the cultural coaching of the next generation, and to see stereotypes debunked and the message of respect reinforced by our players makes for powerful education. I would like to thank everybody at the Club who helped to make this event so successful.” Gavin Muir, ArabTRUST Chairman, said: “ArabTRUST are proud to continue their support of Show Racism The Red Card as this fits directly with one of our main objectives in community development. Using professional footballers is a powerful way to engage with young people about issues such as racism and it was great to see all those who attended getting so involved in all of the activities.” Nicola Hay, Campaign Manager of Show Racism the Red Card, said: “The dangers of racism are significant and education is vital in order that young people can recognise these and other forms of discrimination and be equipped to safely challenge them as they grow up and develop. “Schools in the area are very keen to engage with the campaign and the young people we have worked with are very positive about it. “Dundee United FC and ArabTRUST are strong supporters of the campaign and it is great to be able to bring local pupils along to such an iconic stadium to learn about anti-racism with strong role models.”
