United Supports Organ Donation Week

5th September 2018

It is national Organ Donation week and Dundee United are pleased to help raise awareness of the issue.

Currently, at least one person on average dies every day in need of an organ transplant because there are not enough organs available.

This is compounded by families not having discussed the subject, or their loved one's end-of-life decisions.

As such, key part of the campaign is encouraging conversations within families to talk about organ and tissue donation.

Around 9 in 10 people in Scotland agree with organ donation but only 5 in 10 have recorded their decision by joining the NHS Organ Donor Register. Around 550 people in Scotland are currently waiting on an organ transplant and families are far more likely to allow organ donation to proceed when their relative's opt in decision is registered.

It is also worth noting that one is more likely to need a transplant than be a donor, because less than 1% of us will die in a way which means we can be a donor. That's why every donor registration is so important, irrespective of age, health, size or sexuality.

The Club supports the appeal for individuals to join the NHS Organ Donor Register at www.organdonationscotland.org. It doesn't take long and could change up to seven lives.
