CELEBRATE JIM MCLEAN'S CAREER AND DONATE TO ALZHEIMER SCOTLAND THIS SATURDAY

6th January 2021

Our first home game of 2021 has us returning to our home stadium to celebrate the life and Tannadice career of Jim McLean.

With the permission and wishes of the McLean family, we will honour and celebrate Jim’s impact on Dundee United in a number of ways and will donate half the profits from these projects towards Alzheimer Scotland.

Matchday programmes will be available for purchase both online (now) and in certain Scotmid shops across Dundee and Invergowrie from Friday noon;

  • 53 Main Street, Invergowrie, Dundee, DD2 5AB
  • 204-208 Clepington Road, Dundee, DD3 8BG
  • 81 Fintry Road, Dundee DD4 9JB
  • 12-14 Castle Street, Tayport, DD6 9AF
  •  48-52 High Street, Newport-On-Tay, DD6 8AD

The Cooperative branch at Unit 7 Campfield Square in Broughty Ferry will also have stock available from Friday noon.

This 80-page limited-edition special features interviews and images and goes into great detail of the legacy Jim leaves behind looking at what he achieved, how he accomplished it and how he turned United into the club we know and love today.

The limited-edition programme can also be purchased directly via the DUFC shop here (postage and package applies) with a share of the proceeds again going to Alzheimer Scotland.

Our pre-match show on DUTV – hosted by Alistair Heather – is entirely dedicated to honouring the success and memories that Jim brought to United, including features focusing on his biggest achievements domestically and in Europe and discussions with special guests to discuss the legacy he left behind at Tannadice.

The 30-minute special tribute show will be available to all of our VST holders and to everyone who purchases a PPV, however, we would advise purchasing early to ensure you are able to log-in on time to watch the show which starts around 2.15pm.

PPV’s for Saturday’s match can be purchased here at the usual price of £12.50. Our digital partners Stream Digital have very kindly waived their fees for this game allowing for a share of the profits from Saturday’s PPV sales to be donated to Alzheimer’s Scotland.

Paul Aniello, Director if Stream Digital said: “We fully support the club's efforts to promote and donate proceeds towards Alzheimer Scotland in Jim Mclean’s memory. Dundee United is a valued partner of Stream Digital and we are happy to play our part in celebrating the life of their greatest manager."

On the pitch, United players will warm-up in tribute t-shirts and there will also be a minute’s applause prior to kick-off, where we would encourage those watching at home to join in and show our appreciation for a man who brought so much joy to us all. These t-shirts will be auctioned off after the match with a share of the proceeds also going to Alzheimer Scotland.

There will also be a co-ordinated applause in the 83rd minute of the match and we encourage everyone at home to join in this tribute. Indeed, we would love you to record your tribute and send it to us so we could create a montage of tributes on DUTV.

The Club has also endorsed a Just Giving page has also been set-up in Jim’s name at the request of his family to raise further funds for Alzheimer’s Scotland which can be found here.

Jim Pearson, the Director of Policy & Research at Alzheimer Scotland said: “Alzheimer Scotland are deeply saddened by the passing of football legend, Jim McLean and send our sincerest sympathies to his family and all who knew him. We are honoured to be a beneficiary of a fund being set up in Jim’s name.

"Alzheimer Scotland’s mission is to make sure nobody faces dementia alone. This has never been so important as during the coronavirus pandemic, which has had such a significant impact on our dementia community. The support from this fund will help us continue to be there for people with dementia and their families and carers across Scotland.

"We are proud of our much-valued ongoing relationship with Dundee United Football Club, through the Football Memories Project and continued fundraising initiatives. This work is making a real and direct impact to the lives of so many people in Scotland living with dementia, as well as their families and friends. We must say thank you to the McLean family, as well as the Dundee United Football Club and Community Trust.

"If you, or anyone you know, would like information or emotional support our 24-hour Freephone Dementia Helpline is here for you. Call us anytime on 0808 808 3000."

We hope the entire United family will join us this Saturday in celebrating the career of the greatest manager our club has ever known.
