WOMEN DRAW WITH GLASGOW AND REMAIN UNBEATEN ON TOP

27th September 2021

Both Dundee United and Glasgow remain unbeaten in the Scottish Women’s Premier League after playing out a goalless draw at New Tinto Park.

The result means United stay top of the league after four games, with Boroughmuir also remaining unbeaten.

Graeme Hart made four changes from the previous week’s win over Queen’s Park as Robyn Smith, Danni McGinley, Lauren Perry and Jade McLaren all came in, the latter following a three game ban.

United could have gone ahead after just two minutes as Cassie Cowper got her head to a loose ball but it was pawed away by one time United trialist Kendall Welsh.

Four minutes later it was another Danni McGinley throw that caused problems inside the box as the ball fell to Laurie Ross who set up Rachel Todd but she fired wide just past the post.

Glasgow had their first opportunity in the tenth minute as Shivohn Honeyman’s corner was headed off target by Nicola Reid.

McGinley was involved again for United as she played a low ball into the box, however Welsh had to look sharp to hold the cross with Todd and Smith lurking.

United could, and probably should, have gone ahead just before the half hour mark when McGinley was played through on goal. She shrugged off her marker to get a shot away but Welsh got a hand to the ball to push it round the post.

The attacker nodded over from a Todd corner before Cassie Cowper tries her luck only for a defender to get a touch on the ball and divert it into the grateful arms of Welsh.

Both sides came close to grabbing a late first half goal when McGinley’s 25 yard free kick flew inches over the bar before McGoldrick missed an open goal and Henderson was denied by Lauren Perry for the visitors.

A Rachel Todd cross inside the first 60 seconds of the second half found McGinley but her header was off target as she searched for her eleventh goal of the campaign.

Five minutes later McLaren combined well with Smith, allowing for the latter to run down the right and cut the ball back for Todd; the winger saw her effort take a touch off a defender before falling the wrong side of the far post.

Chances were few and far between for both sides with Molly Ramsay firing wide before Henderson struggled to find the target.

Glasgow sub Nyla Murphy was sent clear with fifteen minutes remaining but she sent her lob over the net when it looked easier to score.

The final chance of the game fell to United as Smith sent another corner into the box but it was headed wide in amongst the ruck of players inside the six-yard box.

The result means that United keep their second clean sheet of the season but fail to score for the first time since March 2020.

Graeme Hart’s side are the odd side in the league next week so will have to wait until October 10th for their next scheduled fixture, travelling to Boroughmuir Thistle.
