THE TEAM TALK
Jim Goodwin made three changes to this afternoon's DUFC XI!
Liam Grimshaw, Glenn Middleton and Kai Fotheringham were all back amongst the starters, whilst Louis Moult and Jordan Tillson were named on the bench. Scott McMann was the final change, as our left back missed out with a minor knock.
Declan Glass was back in a matchday squad for the first time since January - coincidently coming against this afternoon's opponents in a 1-0 win in the Highlands.
There were a total of seven DUFC Academy Graduates involved this afternoon.
ANOTHER SLOW START
There was little to separate the sides in the opening ten minutes of play before the visitors hit the front.
Alex Greive had our first sighting at goal following a clever one-two with Tony Watt inside the visitors' penalty area, however, his low, curling effort fell the wrong side of the post.
Duncan Ferguson's side opened the scoring inside 12 minutes through Wallace Duffy. Aribim Pepple was at the heart of the move as he beat his man down the left before his cross was parried by Jack Walton for Duffy to tap home from six yards out.
Ross Docherty almost restored parity when he forced Mark Ridgers into a save with a fierce effort from inside the penalty area on 18 minutes.
Our woes were added to just a few minutes later as Kevin Holt was forced off with a knock, being replaced by Ross Graham.
There was a rather bizarre caution for Pepple just before 25 minutes as he entered the field of play too early after receiving treatment and immediately interfering.
MORE ATTACKING INTENT
Ridgers was again called into action as Watt found himself clear of the Caley Thistle back line - his low drive being well saved in the end.
Fotheringham had a first sighting at goal when he nodded Miller Thomson's corner over the bar eight minutes before the half.
AN INSPIRED SUB
Our only change of the half took just ten minutes to bear fruit as Moult restored parity with an outrageous effort from just inside the visitors' half.
In a scramble to win possession, a high, bouncing ball was controlled before being lashed over Ridgers and crashing in off the bar from the best part of 50 yards.
We almost found the lead in the minutes following. Declan Gallagher's stunning half-volley was only stopped by the post before Ridgers was again on hand to save the visitors from conceding as he smartly thwarted Graham from point-blank range.
We made two separate changes before the final 15 minutes as Fotheringham and Greive were replaced by Mathew Cudjoe and Chris Mochrie respectively.
LAST-GASP CHANCES
It was all United as we entered the home stretch.
Tenacious play from Thomson kept possession in United's hands before Mochrie got the break of the ball and drove at the Thistle back line. With nothing else on, he fired at goal on his weaker left foot but it was comfortable enough for Ridgers in the end.
James Carragher had the best chance to win it for the hosts at the death as his low drive was cleared off of the line by Docherty and the points were shared.
