DUFCW PLAY-OFF WIN SECURES TOP FLIGHT STATUS

24th May 2024

Dundee United FC Women have secured their top flight status for a third successive season following a well deserved 2-1 victory over Kilmarnock in the SWPL Play-Off Final at the Falkirk Stadium.

The game, beamed live courtesy of BBC Alba under the lights in Grangemouth, Suzy Shepherd's United side were thriving in the spotlight, having the majority of chances in the first half. However, they just couldn't find a way beyond the impressive Ellie Currie in goal for Kilmarnock.

As an entertaining half was nearing its conclusion, a draw looked the most likely outcome. The Ayrshire side produced one last foray into the final third, ending with Abby Robinson latching onto a loose ball on the edge of the United area before bending a curling effort beyond the reach of Megan Sidey from 18 yards, giving Killie a surprising lead.

INTO THE BREAK

United were quick out of the traps following the interval. Taking only ten minutes to draw level, a set play on the left saw a well worked move end with Georgie Robb latching onto a lay-off from Natasha Bruce before unleashing a magnificent effort past the ‘keeper Currie from outside the area.

The comeback was complete with twenty minutes to go when Brodie Greenwood grabbed her first ever United goal. Killie didn’t deal with another set-piece from the Terrors, skipper Rachel Todd seized the opportunity and drove into the box before clipping a delightful ball to the back post for Bruce to once more be the supplier, this time for Greenwood to side-foot home from close range.

Celebrations as Brodie Greenwood's effort secures victory

As the clock ticked towards the ninety-sixth minute of injury-time, Killie almost leveled with the last kick of the Final, as Reside fired a central free-kick over Sidey's crossbar from 20 yards.

In a dominant display from United, the result sparked memorable scenes at the shrill of the final whistle among the players, staff and supporters as victory in the SWPL Play-Off Final meant securing a place at the top table upon their return next term.
