Suzy Shepherd's Dundee United Women play host to Celtic Women at the CalForth Construction Arena at Tannadice Park in what promises to be an electrifying Scottish Women's Premier League clash.
The match due to be played under the Tannadice lights kicks off at 7:30pm, with both teams eager to secure valuable points as the season progresses; supporters are in for an exciting encounter.
The ladies will be aiming to capitalise on home advantage when they take on a formidable Celtic side who will be smarting following their Scottish Cup exit at Glasgow City last weekend.
Optimism and Vision
Speaking ahead of the game, DUFCW manager Suzy Shepherd expressed her excitement for the fixture while embracing the challenge ahead.
“It will be a challenging game, but we’ll be organised, follow our game plan, and want the players to enjoy and execute it to the best of their ability. We have a few injury concerns, but there are still many good players in the squad. Though young, they have great potential, and we believe in them. We're really looking forward to the occasion.”
The manager also highlighted the promising future of the squad, with a youthful team ready to step up and compete at the highest level.
“Some players will be in school before the game, with about half the squad still in full-time education as students. This highlights where we are on our journey. We’ll likely have eight or nine teenagers starting, showing the squad’s great potential.”
Exciting Challenges and Bright Prospects Ahead
Despite the challenge posed by Celtic, she remains optimistic and enthusiastic about the team’s upcoming run of games.
“There are still many games left, and everything is to play for. Several teams are in a similar position to us. Tomorrow will be a challenge, but after that, we have twelve games where we believe we can compete. We'll give our all, both staff and players, to earn as many points as possible and secure our SWPL1 status for another year.”
Reflecting on the resilience and belief within her side, the manager emphasised the squad’s determination to fight for survival and success.
“I was brought in last season to keep us up, and we achieved that. This season is no different. We’ll do everything we can to secure points and stay safe. With three teams going down, it’s even more challenging, but we believe in ourselves, and the players believe in each other. We’re certainly not going down without a fight.”
Midfielder Alix Moodie’s Call for Fans to Support Women’s Football
DUFCW's Alix Moodie also spoke passionately about the opportunity to represent the team and the growing impact of women’s football.
“For all the young players and girls watching who aspire to be footballers, it's great to be a role model for them as they see us play on a big stage.”
The midfielder emphasised the importance of the occasion, noting how hosting a team like Celtic is a chance to elevate women’s football and showcase the talent within Dundee United’s squad.
“We played Celtic in a big stadium for the first game of the season, and now it's a role reversal as they come to our home pitch. It's great to have a game like this to promote women's football and showcase what we can do. It's a chance to highlight the talent in our squad, which can sometimes be overlooked, with the bigger teams taking most of the limelight.”
Looking ahead, Alix, a summer capture from St. Johnstone, also acknowledged the significance of upcoming fixtures: “We have a run of games with opportunities to take points from teams around us in the table. These teams will be thinking the same, so it’ll be a battle on the pitch, and it will come down to who wants it more.
